How to Attach Plywood to a Bed Frame Using Hinges

Standard metal bed frames consist only of rails, leaving the stuff that you store under your bed exposed. Conceal the space below your bed and improve the look of your metal bed frame with plywood skirting. Attach the skirting to the rails of the bed frame with hinges to allow the wooden panels to be raised. Panels capable of being raised will allow you to easily access the space below the bed. Before or after attaching, stain and seal or paint the plywood to match your bedroom decor.

Instructions

    • 1

Set hinges in place near the ends of the side rails, the head rail and the footer rail. Mark the holes with a marker. Remove the hinges. Mark corresponding holes on the plywood panels.

    • 2

Drill pilot holes through the marked points on the plywood panels.

    • 3

Set a metal drill bit into a drill. Drill holes at the marked points on the bed frame. Start slow and hold the drill steady to keep the bit from slipping when starting the hole.

    • 4

Attach the hinges to the plywood panels, using wood screws.

    • 5

Set the panels in place, aligning the holes on the hinges with the drilled holes on the bed frame. Insert recess-head bolts through the holes. Use the shortest bolts possible, so their stems will not get in the way of the bed’s box frame.

Secure the bolts with washers and nuts.
