Carpenter Headboard Projects

Some beds don't come with a headboard, but that doesn't mean that a headboard can't be added later. Some carpentry skills are needed to make your own headboard. Some carpenter headboard projects only need basic skills and cutting tools and can be fully customized to meet your bedroom's decor.

Instructions

  1. Upholstered Headboard

    • 1

Measure the width of the bed that you're making the headboard for and add 1 to 2 inches to that number for the width of the headboard.

    • 2

Mark the measurements for the headboard onto the plywood.

    • 3

Cut the plywood down using the table saw according to the measurements you marked onto it.

    • 4

Mark the same measurements onto the upholstery foam and cut it down to size as well.

    • 5

Spray the spray adhesive in an even layer over the plywood, then place the upholstery foam on top. Press down gently to make sure that it sticks. Allow it to dry according to the spray adhesive instructions.

    • 6

Lay the material over the foamed headboard. Turn over the headboard and pull the material so that it's taut, then begin stapling the material to the wood, making sure that all four sides have plenty of staples to keep the material in place.

    Wood Headboard

    • 7

Draw out the shape and design that you want your headboard to be on a piece of paper. For this project, a simple semicircle headboard will be made.

    • 8

Measure the width of the bed and add 1 to 2 inches for the headboard width measurement.

    • 9

Clamp the plywood to your worktable using table clamps.

    • 10

Trace the design you want using your headboard measurements directly onto the plywood.

    • 11

Cut the pattern out of the plywood using a jigsaw.

    • 12

Unclamp the cut plywood and sand it down evenly on both sides.

    • 13

Paint both sides of the headboard and allow to dry completely. Alternately, you can stain the wood instead if you don't want it painted a particular color. Allow the stain to dry and the headboard is finished.
