Measure the double king size headboard and mark it into a 52-inch section and two other sections of equal size, depending on the headboard dimensions. Cut the three sections apart using a saw and sand the cut edges using medium-grit sandpaper.
Position a 32-inch 2-by-4 board exactly 6 inches up from the bottom of the two smaller headboard pieces, which are the head and foot of the daybed. Space them evenly and centered on the board, parallel to the bottom with their largest surfaces against the headboard and footboard. Drill four holes through these boards, which are the short support boards, and attach them to the headboards and footboards with 3-inch wood screws, using shorter screws if they will stick out the back.
Position the headboard and footboard upright and parallel to each other with the help of an assistant. Have the installed short support boards face each other. Suspend a 50-inch 2-by-4 board between the headboard and footboard, with its ends against them and its largest surface against the end of the short support boards. Drill two holes through this board, which is a long support board, and into the ends of each short support board. Attach it in place with 3-inch wood screws. Repeat to add a long support board on the other side.
Evenly space four 35-inch 2-by-4 boards on top of the long support boards with their largest surfaces down. Drill two holes through each of these boards and into each long support board. Attach them in place with 3-inch wood screws.
Set the largest section of the headboard up against the rear of the headboard and footboard and drill four holes through the back of this large section, which is the rearboard, and into both the headboard and footboard. Attach them together with 3-inch wood screws.
Cover the daybed with a short mattress or cushions, pillows and blankets to make it a comfortable sleeping space.
