Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of your mattress and subtract two inches from each side. This lets the mattress hang over the edge of the frame so you do not hit the wood with your legs.

    • 2

Use an electric saw to cut two 2-by-12 boards to match the length measurement from Step One. Subtract 3 1/2 inches from the width measurement and cut two 2-by-12 boards to use as end pieces. Cut three more pieces with this same length to use as support beams in the middle of the bed frame. Use 2-by-8 or 2-by-6 boards if you prefer a lower bed frame.

    • 3

Arrange the four pieces in the form of a rectangle on the floor. Place the shorter side pieces and support beams inside the end pieces. Secure each connection point with wood glue and apply clamps to hold the boards in place until the glue dries. Let the glue sit overnight. Take off the clamps and insert three wood screws into each corner for added stability.

Measure and cut enough plywood to completely cover the top of the frame.

    • 5

Smooth out the surface of your plywood with a power sander if you have unfinished wood. Skip this step if you are using prefinished lumber. Apply a coat of your preferred wood stain or paint. Let the bed frame dry overnight, then check the color of your finish. Apply another coat if you would like a darker finish. Wait for the second coat to dry completely before handling the wood.

Secure the plywood onto the top of the frame with wood screws. Place your mattress on top of the plywood.
