How to Disassemble a Murphy Bed

Murphy beds represent a useful and unusual way to solve the need for extra sleeping space in a home. These beds are flat, floor-level beds with no box spring that fold up into the wall or a cabinet against the wall when not in use, taking up no more room than a wardrobe during the day. The attractive wood finish that these cabinets often include is one reason why the Murphy bed is chosen over more space-using options such as futons or hide-a-bed sofas. Taking a Murphy bed apart is often necessary for storage, transport or for refinishing it in pieces.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Murphy bed and lay the bed section down on the floor. Remove all bedding, pillows and mattresses to expose the bare frame of the bed. Find the hinges, located near the corner of the bed. Unscrew the hinges from the upright portion of the bed and set them aside in a secure container, as they are necessary for assembly later on.

    • 2

Separate the floor section of the Murphy bed from the wall section now that the hinges have been unscrewed. Use the drill to unscrew the screws holding the mattress supports in place against the frame. Set the mattress supports aside.

    • 3

Unscrew the side panels of the bed section from the headboard and footboard using the drill, and unscrew these screws from the inside of the frame, where the screw heads will be to keep them from view. Continue to unscrew the pieces of the bed section until they are all disassembled.

    • 4

Unscrew the wall section from the wall by loosening the screws that go through the rear board of the wall section and into the wall. Have an assistant hold the wall section in place during this process. Lower the wall section gently to the floor. Unscrew the side panels of the wall section from the top and bottom boards of the wall section. Continue to unscrew any additional sections until the wall section has been completely disassembled.
