The most common of all cedar canopy beds is the log bed. Cedar log beds are made with rustic logs and come in a variety of styles, with or without a canopy. Choose a design to work with the existing decor of your home. A cedar log bed will work in a rustic, eclectic or country-style design scheme. Update an old cedar log bed with a coat of paint in a fresh, modern color, such as cherry, lime or bright blue, for an unexpected twist. Look for bed designs with whimsical headboards of woven branches.
Another take on a homemade cedar bed is a design created with cedar planks. The rustic nature of this style of bed can be softened with sheer white drapes or given a modern look with patterned curtains, such as damask, honeycomb, geometric designs, arabesques, florals and botanical patterns. Design the bed after a plan that can be found at a hardware store or online, and add four tall posts to form a canopy. Connect the posts either with more cedar or with decorative curtain rods.
Design a cedar canopy daybed you can place indoors or out. Whether you choose to paint or stain the daybed largely depends on the existing color scheme of the space the daybed occupies. Dress the canopy as you would a full-size bed with a canopy and drapes. The daybed can be placed in the middle of the room, against a wall or on a deck or patio. The time involved in carrying out the project depends on the complexity of the plans you select, coupled with your skill level.
Modify an existing bed with cedar posts to create a canopy. Metal and cedar are a visually appealing combination for a homemade canopy, or you can attach the cedar posts to a wooden bed as well. For projects with different types of wood, unify the look by painting or staining all the wood in one hue. Another possibility is to design a cedar headboard with a combination of reclaimed cedar fence planks and cedar twigs and branches. Use precut posts for a combination of straight lines and twisted branches.
