How to Distress a Wood Bed

Antique furniture brings an elegant and distinguished atmosphere to your bedroom, but can cost a small fortune. If you are decorating on a limited budget, try creating your own faux antique furniture for a fraction of the cost of the real thing. The bed is an ideal starting point -- it is, after all, called a bedroom. All you need is a wood bed and a few items from your local craft or home improvement store and you will be sleeping in style.

Instructions

    • 1

Strike the bed with a hammer and mallet to put dents in the wood. Make more dents to create a more dramatic look.

    • 2

Sand the bed around the edges to mimic the look of natural wear. Take off more wood around the corners using a course grit sandpaper. Use a fine grit paper to smooth random areas on the bed that would be more likely to show signs of wear, such as around the legs.

    • 3

Scratch the surface of the entire bed using a wire brush. Pay close attention to parts of the bed closer to the floor where the bed would have been kicked.
