Rearranging a Small Bedroom

A small bedroom limits the furniture arrangements that will work comfortably, especially if you have large furniture pieces. The location of permanent features in the room, such as the windows, the closet and the door, also plays a role in how you are able to rearrange the furniture. Before you begin rearranging, take time to declutter and remove the items that you don't really need in the bedroom. You may find you have more options for rearranging when you get rid of the extra items.

Instructions

    • 1

Walk through your bedroom to figure out what you like and dislike about the current furniture arrangement. Note the areas that seem crowded or difficult to navigate. Decide if you want to get rid of any of the existing furniture to make more room.

    • 2

Place the bed first since it will take up the most space. Beds are often placed on the larger walls opposite the doorway, but play with the placement to find the position that makes the most sense in your room. Test out the bed in the new location to make sure it is comfortable and that you are able to easily get in and out.

    • 3

Place the nightstands on either side of the bed if you have them.

    • 4

Place the remaining pieces of furniture in the room, starting with the biggest and working down to the smallest. Test each piece of furniture to ensure you have enough space to use them properly. For example, pull out the dresser drawers to ensure you are able to extend them fully.

    • 5

Walk around the room doing activities you would normally do in the bedroom. For example, do the activities you normally perform in the morning when you're getting ready. Make sure the new arrangement allows you to easily do these things without bumping into furniture.
