Anchoring a Headboard to a Wall

Ensure that you, your family members or guests sleep safely under a headboard that is securely anchored to the wall; this is definitely a piece of furniture that you don't want hanging precariously over loved ones. Make sure the d-rings you use are capable of supporting the weight of the headboard. Drilling directly into studs will provide the strongest and most secure hold, but if studs do not line up with the headboard, use metal wall anchors instead.

  • Measuring tape
  • Level
  • Pencil
  • Screwdriver
  • D-Ring, 2 heavy duty with accompanying screws

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the placement of the headboard on the wall and draw a light, horizontal line that is equal to the width of the headboard. This line will represent the top of the headboard once it is hung on the wall.

    • 2

Attach the d-ring to the back of the headboard. The d-rings should be placed a couple inches from each side of the headboard and a couple inches from the top. Use the measuring tape and level to ensure they are placed equally on each side.

    • 3

Measure from the top of the headboard down and from the outside of the headboard over to the d-ring, where the ring will hang on the screw. Do this for the d-rings on each side of the headboard.

    • 4

Measure over and then down from each end of the horizontal line previously drawn on the wall to the same measurements obtained in Step 3. Make a mark on the wall for each wall anchor.

    • 5

Drill a pilot hole for the wall anchors that is at least as long as the anchor. Use a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the wall anchor to ensure a snug fit. Tap the anchor into place with a hammer. Drive the screw into the anchor. Let just enough of the screw stick out from the anchor for the d-ring to hook onto.

    • 6

Use the level and measuring tape to verify that the screws are level and that they will line up with the d-rings.

    • 7

Hang the headboard on the screws. You may need another person to help lift the headboard and hold it steady.
