How to Get Rid of a Creaky Bed Frame

A creaky bed frame can wake you up with its noise as you move at night or bother your downstairs neighbors as you climb in and out of bed. Creaky frames can be caused by loose screws and joints or by friction caused by the slats rubbing against the frame. The easiest way to get rid of the creaking is to inspect, tighten, and lubricate all the joints and screws in the frame. You may have to do this once a year or so, as the screws become loose again from use.

  • Lubricating spray or oil

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the mattress and box spring so you can access all parts of the bed frame. Pull the frame away from the wall. Remove the slats from the bed frame and set them aside.

    • 2

Tighten all the screws of the bed frame, including the ones that hold any leg casters in place, and the screws that hold the head and foot boards to the frame. Check all the joints for screws that could be coming loose and tighten them down.

    • 3

Spray all the joints and screws with a lubricating spray or oil. If tightening the screws does not work by itself, lubricating the joints will ease the friction that causes the creaking.

Replace the slats and the mattress. If the frame still squeaks, spray the spots where the slats rest on the frame with the lubricating oil.
