Use a screwdriver to remove the hardware from the dresser. Take out the drawers and lay them alongside the dresser base atop the drop cloths. Move this project outside if the weather permits. Open a window or door for ventilation if you are planning to paint the dresser indoors.
Clean the dresser with a damp cloth, removing dust and other debris.
Fill any cracks, dings or holes with a wood filler and putty knife.
Put on the plastic gloves, dust mask and safety goggles. Use the sandpaper to sand off old paint or varnish and smooth down rough edges that you repaired with the wood filler.
Vacuum the dresser and drawers to remove sanding dust and wipe the sanded surfaces with a damp cloth.
Open the can of paint primer and mix it thoroughly with a wooden stir stick. Pour some primer into a paint tray and replace the primer lid on the can to keep the primer from drying out. Dip the paintbrush into the loaded paint tray and apply an even coat of primer to all of the dresser and drawer exterior surfaces. Allow the primer to dry completely.
Pry open the can of sage-green paint and mix it thoroughly with a wooden stir stick. Pour some paint into a clean paint tray and replace the paint lid on the can to keep the paint from drying out. Dip the paintbrush into the loaded paint tray and apply an even coat of paint to all of the dresser and drawer exterior surfaces. Allow the paint to dry completely.
Apply a second coat of sage-green paint.
Reattach the hardware with the screwdriver and insert drawers.
