Measure your mirrored dresser, and choose a location as close as you can to natural lighting during the time of day you mostly get ready, especially for makeup application. Next, evaluate electrical sockets for your hair dryer and mood or enhanced lighting. Look for an area with wall space for a large, hanging mirror. Finally, make sure there is enough space for seating; you will be adding that to your dresser and should have enough room to comfortably move around it.
Choose your seating. Since your dresser likely doesn’t have an opening for a chair to tuck in beneath it when not in use, opt for a bench instead. A bench will visually take up less space because it doesn’t have a back and can be pulled closer to the dresser while you sit and get ready. When not in use, a bench can be pushed flush against the dresser or at the foot of your bed. Use a comfy throw blanket or pillows to cushion the bench and match your overall vanity decor.
Hang a big, stylish mirror above your vanity; it will be both decorative and functional. Choose one as wide and tall as you can to accommodate your “readiness” needs, but be sure its style is in keeping with your dresser. A plain, oval or three-panel mirror with etching works nicely with an Old Hollywood mirrored dresser.
Add lighting. Wall sconces were popular in Old Hollywood and will enhance your hanging mirror. Otherwise, lantern chandeliers are economical and effective, as are table-top lamps. Remember, you won’t always be getting ready in daylight. Just be sure to choose lighting that reflects the mood of the vanity -- or sanctuary -- you are creating.
Accessorize your vanity with other Old Hollywood-inspired items such as vintage perfume bottles, antique picture frames and candles. Choose accessories that make you feel good. Add a toe-pleasing area rug if space allows.
