Can I Use an Egg Crate Foam as Foam for My Headboard?

Homemade upholstered headboards add a splash of creativity, style and personality to the bedroom. You can customize a headboard to complement the decor of the space, and you can use budget-friendly items such as an egg crate foam. Egg crate foam offers the amount of padding and support necessary to upholster a headboard.
  1. Thickness

    • The foam for an upholstered headboard should be at least 2 inches thick, so egg crate foam works well. Just make sure that the flat side of the egg crate foam faces the fabric of the headboard to prevent a bumpy appearance once you attach the fabric.

    Measurements

    • Measurements are essential to cutting the right size of egg crate foam. If you don't have plans to incorporate the upholstery into a pre-existing wooden headboard, then you will need to take measurements of the width of the bed and measure the desired height of the headboard. Most headboards are slightly wider than the bed. By adding an extra 2 inches to the final measurement of the mattress, you will guard against creating a headboard that is too small.

    Quilting Batting

    • Quilting batting is just as important as foam padding for an upholstered headboard. The batting adds padding to the foam and prevents sharp edges from poking through, especially in areas where the foam has been cut. Quilting batting should be several inches larger than the headboard as it will need to be wrapped around the edges and stapled into place.

    Considerations

    • While egg crate foam pads are cost-effective and plentiful, it may be difficult to find an egg crate foam pad that is large enough to cover the surface area of the headboard. Remedy the situation by applying several egg crate foam pads side-by-side onto the headboard. If the foam pads are large enough and the quilting batting has been attached securely enough, this should keep the foam pads from shifting.
