How to Make a Bed Crown Accent

A bed crown accent gives the feel and elegance of a canopy bed, but only consists of a few drapes or curtains attached along the wall at the head of the bed. Bed crowns can be very ornate features, or they can be quite simple and modern, depending on taste and budget. A simple way to create a bed crown accent at home is to use a wall-mounted curtain rod that is hidden behind a simple crown molding bed crown. The crown molding has enough detail to dress up the bed crown without being too elaborate to construct.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand a plank of 25-inch 1-by-3 lumber lengthwise on a 1-inch edge and glue two planks of 6-inch 1-by-3 lumber at each end of the 25-inch plank. From a top-down view, this will look like an elongated square “U” shape.

    • 2

Secure the 6-inch planks to the 25-inch planks with two 1 1/2-inch screws driven through the front of the 25-inch plank into the adjoining ends of the 6-inch planks.

    • 3

Cut a length of crown molding on a miter saw, with the ends cut to inward-facing opposing 45-degree angles. This will make the inner face of the crown molding shorter than the outer face. The inner face length should be 25 inches.

    • 4

Cut two pieces of crown molding with the inner face 6 inches, with one end cut to an inward-facing 45-degree angle to meet with the angled ends of the longer piece of crown molding, and the other end cut to a straight 90-degrees to sit flush against the wall.

    • 5

Place the angled ends of the crown molding together to form a square “U” shape like the lumber planks and glue the corners together. Fit the molding “U” around the lumber “U.” The top of the molding will sit out a couple inches from the top of the lumber, but the bottom of the molding should sit flush against the bottom of the lumber.

    • 6

Secure the molding to the lumber with finishing nails every 3 to 4 inches around the bottom, then paint the molding and lumber in the desired color and leave to dry.

    • 7

Place the molding and lumber on the wall in position where you want the bed crown to hang from. This can be so the molding is flush with the ceiling, or it can be down from the ceiling. Trace the position of the molding on the wall lightly with pencil.

    • 8

Center a 20-inch curtain rod in the traced position of the molding, with the curtain rod mounts flush against the wall. Secure the curtain rod to the wall with screws that accompany the curtain rods through the screw holes in the mounts into the wall.

    • 9

Position a corner bracket on the inside edge of the ends of the lumber “U,” with one half of the bracket jutting inward, so that it will sit flush against the wall when the lumber and molding are placed against the wall. Secure the bracket to the lumber with 3/4-inch screws through the screw holes of the bracket.

    • 10

Place the molding and lumber back in position on the wall, which will obscure the curtain rod from view. Secure to the wall with 2-inch screws through the portion of the corner bracket that is flush against the wall.

    • 11

Squeeze caulk into any cracks between the molding and the wall to make it look seamless, then retouch with paint as needed.

    • 12

Attach your curtain panels to the curtain rod and arrange them around the head of the bed as desired.
