How to Paint an IKEA Rast Dresser

The IKEA Rast dresser is a simple, three-drawer furnishing that is inexpensive and relatively lightweight. It is constructed of untreated solid wood. To change to color or protect the surface, you can paint it at home in simple fashion, but do some preparation so the results are up to par. First, you will sand the Rast dresser. A sanding block works fine and is easy to use, given the flat surfaces on the dresser. This takes off any debris. It also smooths any manufacturing imperfections. A primer helps seal the surface. It also ensures a good paint bond. Finally, use semigloss paint for superior protection.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the dresser on a drop cloth.

    • 2

Remove the screws from the drawer handles inside the drawer, using the screwdriver.

    • 3

Sand the dresser gently. A soft going-over is sufficient.

    • 4

Apply the primer lightly. Dip the brush in the primer. A depth of 1/2 inch is good. You don't want to use too much. Lightly brush it onto exposed surfaces. Don't paint parts (like the sides of drawers) that won't typically be visible. Don't forget the drawer handles. Allow the primer to dry.

Paint on the semigloss paint just like you applied the primer, lightly. Count on two coats, and three will not be unusual. The primer does the first sealing job, but untreated raw wood drinks up paint, and semigloss doesn't cover like flat finish paint. Use thin coats and take your time. The result will he a fine finish worth of a pro.
