Instructions

Place the dresser on a drop cloth and remove all of the drawers. Wash the dresser and the drawers that you will be keeping with gentle soap, warm water and a clean rag. Wash it a second time with just a rag and warm water to make sure all of the soap is removed. Allow the dresser to dry.

    • 2

Sand the dresser and drawers with coarse grit sandpaper. Follow the wood grain and use long strokes. Sand the entire dresser from top to bottom and then switch to a medium grit sandpaper to smooth out the texture. Wipe the dresser off with a damp rag to remove any residue leftover from the sanding.

Open and stir the can of primer with a paint stirrer stick. Apply the primer to the dresser and drawers with a paintbrush, using small even strokes. Start at the top of the dresser and work your way to the bottom, and then prime the drawers. Allow the primer to dry for a few hours before moving on.

Cut plywood to fit in the drawer slots that will now hold the baskets. Lay the plywood in the bottom of the drawer space and secure it in place using a hammer and nails. The nail size will be dependent on the particular piece of furniture, though the nails should be able to be fully immersed in the wood and not sticking out.

Pick a color and paint the dresser and drawers. Use the same method as you did when applying the primer; small even strokes, starting at the top of the dresser and working your way to the bottom. Paint the drawers after completing the dresser. Allow both the dresser and drawers to dry for 24 to 48 hours.

Purchase decorative baskets in the appropriate size for the space. Decorative baskets can usually be found at places that sell containers or household items. Place the baskets in the drawer slots that are now shelves.
