How to Make a Vintage Bookcase

While a vintage piece of furniture is defined by it's authenticity and old age, if you love the look of antiques, you can turn a bookcase in your home into a vintage-looking piece with a few coats of paint. Keep in mind that you will need to rent an air gun paint sprayer from your local home construction supply store to help ensure the most even finish possible. The best part of a vintage, crackle finish is that you can make mistakes and the finish will still look attractive.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread a drop cloth on a flat outdoor work space.

    • 2

Place the bookcase on top of the drop cloth. Wipe down the bookcase with a sponge to remove dust and dirt. Wipe it down with a dry, clean cloth.

    • 3

Spray the bookcase with the main base color using a paint sprayer. Allow the paint to dry fully.

    • 4

Apply the crackle medium to the first third of the bookcase using a paint brush. Then apply the top coat using the spray gun. Next apply the crackle medium to the second third of the bookcase, followed by the top coat. Repeat until the entire bookcase is covered in crackle medium and top coat. The top coat needs to be applied soon after applying the crackle medium. Allow the paint to dry completely before moving the bookcase back inside your home.
