How to Arrange Furniture in a Sloped Ceiling Attic Bedroom

Typically featuring a sloped ceiling and small windows, an attic is usually thought of as unlivable space, which is why it is converted into storage. But it can be transformed into a spare bedroom that helps increase livable space inside the house. Aim at maximizing the available space with causing it to appear cluttered.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a sketch of the attic and how you want it to look on paper to save time when decorating the room. Because you want to use it as a bedroom, place the bed against the tallest wall in the room, so it serves as the focal point. Include the locations for other essential pieces of furniture in the room, such as a set of chairs or a loveseat, a dresser and lighting. Determine a color theme so you work within in for a cohesive style.

    • 2

Center the bed against the tallest wall, so the distance between its sides and the wall are equal.

    • 3

Set the sofa against the wall on the opposite side of the bed. Use a low-profile piece that provides plenty of seating without taking much space. If the ceiling dips very low on this side of the room, move the seating arrangement forward to keep people from bumping their heads when they sit up. Set a narrow table or low shelving unit behind the sofa to provide room for display items and storage. Alternatively, set two low-profile chairs against the wall, with a small table in between.

    • 4

Mount a rectangular mirror on the wall above the seating arrangement to create the illusion of depth in the space. Center the mirror over the seating arrangement for a balanced look.

    • 5

Place a tall floor lamp on a corner of the sofa to illuminate the space and create a reading nook. Ensure the shade matches the theme of the room.

    • 6

Position a chest or dresser against a side wall, preferably near the bed. Place a tall, cylindrical decoration or lamp on the dresser that draws the eye up, creating an illusion of height.
