How to Use a C Clamp on a Bed Frame

Assembling a metal bed frame typically requires a specialized C-type clamp to hold the rails together and prevent them from shifting. The rail clamps are make of hardened steel, bent to fit around angle-iron bed rails. The clamp includes a thumb screw that is tightened to hold the rails together once they are properly positioned. No tools are necessary to use the C clamps. Because the clamps may be easily installed and removed without tools, the width of the bed frame may be quickly modified to accommodate different size bed foundations and mattresses.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the left and right side bed rails on the floor near to or in the area where the assembled bed will rest. Twin beds typically have two central rails, one at the head and the other at the foot of the bed. Full-size and larger frames often have one or more central rails that span the width of the frame. Unfold or attach the central rails to the side rails.

    • 2

Slide one rail clamp onto each of the left or right center rails. Align the corresponding left and right rails so they meet in the center of the frame. Slide the rail clamp onto the overlapped center rails. The thumb screw is on the bottom of the central rail. Turn the thumb screws on the clamps to loosely connect the center rails.

Measure and note the width of the box spring or mattress foundation. Slide the central rails closer or further apart until they are 1/2 inch closer than the width of the box spring or mattress foundation. Tighten the thumb screws to hold the rails in place.
