How To Make a Log Nightstand

Birch logs grow straight, with a white bark that looks decorative without any other finishing. Turn a collection of these logs into a nightstand with no more woodworking skill than basic cutting and sanding. The tension from leather belts holds the logs in a circular formation, and add to the Western flair of the nightstand. As an added bonus, birch is fast growing, making it a renewable resource.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure from the floor to the top of your mattress. Gather enough straight 1-inch to 3-inch diameter birch logs to cut 24 to this length of that measurement. Cut the logs using a miter saw. You need a variety of log widths, rather than 24 of exactly the same width.

    • 2

Stack the largest diameter logs on end in a tight circle. They should be as close to each other as possible. Add the rest of the logs, making the circle wider, working outward to the narrowest logs. You may need a friend to help you keep the logs standing straight.

    • 3

Wrap a leather belt around the logs 6-inches from the top of the logs. Tighten the belt and latch it, but don't pull as tight as possible yet. Wrap a second leather belt 6-inches from the bottom of the logs, and a third between the first two. Now tighten the center belt as much as you can, then repeat with the other two. The tension of the belts holds the logs together.

    • 4

Use a random orbit sander and 80-grit sand paper to smooth the top of the logs. The sanding will help make sure that the logs are all the same height. Sand again with 200 grit sandpaper, then wipe any saw dust away with a damp cloth.

    • 5

Coat the top of the logs with clear varnish. Allow to dry completely. The varnish seals the logs and keeps them looking great.

    • 6

Turn the nightstand over, carefully, onto your work surface. Sand the bottoms of the logs to even them. Wipe away the saw dust, then apply varnish to the cut ends of the logs. Allow to dry, then turn the nightstand right side.
