How to Measure Material for a Canopy Bed With a Bed Frame

A canopy bed frame consists of four tall bed posts with small rails that attach to each post. With a canopy framework in place, a small amount of material can make the bed a canopy bed. Having the frame in place gives you a multitude of options for hanging fabric. The first thing to decide is how much fabric you want. Choose a long, flowing swag for just the head of the bed or full curtains for the entire frame.

Instructions

  1. Full Curtains

    • 1

Measure from the top rail to the floor and record the measurement.

    • 2

Add 8 inches to the measurement for extra fabric to wrap around the top rail.

    • 3

Add 2 inches for seam allowance.

    • 4

Add 4 to 6 inches if you would like the fabric to pool on the floor.

    • 5

Trim the width of the fabric to suit your tastes. Most widths are 36 inches, which would make a panel 34 inches wide with 1-inch seams.

    Bed Swag

    • 6

Extend the tape measure from the floor up over the top rail to the rail on the opposite side, and down to the floor.

    • 7

Add 2 inches for a seam allowance.

    • 8

Add 8 to 12 inches if you would like the fabric to pool on either side of the bed.
