What Kind of Box Spring Does Not Squeak With a Foam Mattress?

A good night’s sleep depends on many factors, like a settled mind, smooth sheets and a quiet environment. If the squeaking of springs from your bed’s supports is keeping you awake, it is time to try out a new bed frame to eliminate the problem.
  1. Foam Mattress

    • Foam mattresses can be constructed from petroleum or from all-natural latex. Foam mattresses consist of a foam core and can be surrounded by a thin sheath of cotton or linen for comfort. They do not contain any innersprings, so they provide more even support to a sleeper than traditional mattresses. Because a foam mattress has a solid core, it will not squeak or make noise when you roll over on it. Choosing the right kind of support can ensure a quiet night’s rest.

    Supports

    • Foam mattresses provide the best support when you don’t use a box spring for support. Box springs work best with firm traditional innerspring mattresses. For the best support and the least amount of noise, use a slat base for your foam mattress. Slats in a base can be constructed of wood, plastic, rubber or steel. They stretch horizontally underneath a foam mattress.

    Options

    • Depending on how much you are willing to spend for your bed base, you can customize it to provide different levels of support. Placing wider slats closer together provides a firmer area and is often suggested for use in the area beneath a sleeper’s pelvis. Some slat bases have flexible slats mounted in pairs that can adjust to a sleeper’s body as she moves during the night.

    Considerations

    • Because slat bases do not have springs, you won't hear any squeaking at night. If you are tempted to try a platform base instead of a slat base beneath your foam mattress to eliminate any risk of noise, resist the temptation. Foam mattresses are at risk for mildew growth on their undersides, especially in humid climates. They need the air flow provided by the gaps in the slat base to prevent mildew from having the opportunity to flourish.
