How to Fix an Uneven Gap Between Two Drawers

A dresser or cabinet with drawers that are not properly spaced doesn't look as good as it should and may not even work properly. The gaps between different drawers may vary in size, or one gap may be wider at one side than the other. The best way to fix this problem depends on the structure of the cabinetry and the types of drawer slides used.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the drawers that are above and below the uneven gap from the cabinet. Look on both sides of the drawers to find out what type of drawer slides are used.

    • 2

Loosen the screws that are holding the slide to the side of the cabinet if you are dealing with metal drawer slides. To make one side of the gap between the drawers smaller, lower the drawer slide on the upper drawer that you removed or raise the drawer slide on the lower drawer.

Install a thin wood shim on top of the wooden frame if the cabinet you are dealing with utilizes wooden drawer slides. Place the shim underneath the side of the bottom drawer that you removed, on the side where the gap is too large. Reinsert both drawers into the cabinet. Adjust the thickness of the shim if necessary. When you are confident that the shim is the right thickness, dab some glue onto its bottom surface and glue it in place on top of the interior cabinet frame.
