How to Remove the Top From an Armoire

A armoire is, at its most basic function, a wardrobe. But many use the piece as a TV cabinet or storage unit. With the armoire top removed, you can extend a TV signal antenna or have more room to store clothes and other items. Some armoire tops are simply nailed onto the body of the unit; other tops are held and secured in place by other parts below or above it.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all items from the top section of the armoire. Keep the two top armoire doors open.

    • 2

Wedge the top jamb free with a pry bar. The top jamb contains the connectors that hold the doors shut, and is nailed to the front of the armoire. The nails are sunk within the wood, so the entire piece must be pried away. Not all armoires have a top jamb, but if your armoire does, it is nailed to the top of the cabinet and must be removed.

Stand above the top of the armoire on a stepladder or sturdy chair. Pry off each piece of wood bordering each side of the top piece. These pieces are also nailed in place and secure the top of the armoire to the body of the cabinet. Not all armoires have these border pieces.

Pry off the top of the armoire once the perimeter pieces are free. The top is nailed into the body of the unit.
