How to Build a Wall of Clothing Wardrobes

Clothing wardrobes create an impressive and highly functional effect when installed next to and on top of each other. The resulting appearance is one of supreme organization and style. Having each piece of clothing attractively and distinctly displayed, as they are when hung in this fashion, ensures that the clothes get the proper recognition they deserve and that the owner is aware of each piece. This helps prevent lost and forgotten clothing and leads to better coordinated outfits.

Instructions

    • 1

Set two 1/2-by-24-by-48-inch plywood boards on a working surface to be the side boards of the wardrobe. Have an assistant hold them parallel to each other with the longer, thinner side against the working surface. Keep them 3 feet apart.

    • 2

Butt a 1/2-by-24-by-36-inch plywood board against one of the side board ends to be the top board of the wardrobe. Drill holes every 6 inches through the top board and into each side board. Tighten 2-inch wood screws into each hole to fasten the boards together. Repeat on the other end of the side boards to affix the bottom board.

    • 3

Set a 1/2-by-36-by-49-inch board on top of this frame and drill holes every 8 inches down through this board, which is the rear board, and into the frame. Affix the boards together with 2-inch wood screws.

Flip the wardrobe over and set another 1/2-by-36-by-49-inch board on top of the frame. Put 2 side-mount cabinet hinges between the board, which is the door, and either of the side boards. Use a pencil to mark the holes for the hinges on the door and side board. Drill out these holes, then attach the hinges, using 1/2-inch wood screws.

    • 5

Drill a 1-inch hole in the center of two 1/2-by-3-by-24-inch boards. Set on either end of a 35-inch dowel with a 1-inch diameter, and slide the boards into the top of the wardrobe, about 6 inches from the top. Drill four holes through each dowel support board and into the side boards. Attach the dowel support boards to the side boards with 1-inch wood screws. Repeat to create as many wardrobes as required.

Install the wardrobes by placing wood spacer boards measuring 1/2-by-2-by-various lengths underneath each wardrobe and between each wardrobe horizontally and vertically. Space the boards so that they are within 3 inches of the fronts of the wardrobes. Paint or stain the spacer boards to match the cabinet and drill the cabinets in place through the spacer boards and to each other.
