Measure the size of your existing footboard if you have one. If you make one from scratch, measure the bed frame’s width and add 4 inches. This new measurement lets the footboard slightly hang over the rails.
Lay one piece of plywood 64-by-42-by-three-quarters inches on a flat surface. Cover the boar’s top with wood glue and lay a piece the same size on top. Repeat this step until you have four pieces of plywood stacked and glued. Clamp the wood and let dry overnight.
Apply a layer of wood glue along the top edge of the stacked boards. Set a 65-by-1-by-1-inch board on top of the glue and clamp it. Remove the clamps after the glue dries, and then glue a 66-inch long board to the top. Make sure that each board slightly overhangs the edges of the original plywood for a stair step look.
Add a layer of glue to the last wood plank’s top. Arrange a piece of wood molding 67-inches long evenly on top of the plank. Clamp the wood and let dry overnight. Remove the clamps and sand the wood surfaces smooth with fine-grit sandpaper.
Paint a thin layer of wood stain on the new footboard with a foam paintbrush. After 60 seconds, wipe off the excess stain with a dry cloth. Pick a stain color that matches the headboard’s color.
Remove the mattress and box spring from the bed. Place the footboard at the bed’s base. The footboard should sit flat on the floor with the back pressed against the bed frame. Look for the holes in the bed frame and screw a 2-inch wood screw through each hole into the footboard with an electric screwdriver.
