How to Make a Sink Cabinet out of Drawers

Add charm and personal style to a bathroom by repurposing an old or new dresser into a sink cabinet. If you’re handy with simple tools, such as a drill and screwdriver, you can turn a set of drawers into a bathroom vanity in a single afternoon. Use an old dresser you have on hand, or shop for one that fits the intended space at second-hand shops, antique stores or furniture retailers. If you can install plumbing, do the hook-up yourself. Otherwise, call a plumber to handle the water line connections.

  • Screwdriver
  • Chalk
  • Drill and hole-cutting bits

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the drawers from the dresser.

    • 2

Reach inside and unscrew the fasteners to remove the tabletop shelf from the furniture body.

    • 3

Rub chalk over the ends of the plumbing fixtures extending from the wall.

    • 4

Push the dresser into place, allowing the chalk to mark the back as places for plumbing access.

    • 5

Pull the dresser back out and cut holes in the chalk-marked areas using a drill fitted with a hole-cutting attachment that creates an opening slightly larger than the plumbing pipes.

    • 6

Install a suitably sized countertop and basin, and attach a faucet. Connect the plumbing, or call a plumber to install the water lines.

    • 7

Detach the face of the top drawer. Glue and screw the face permanently back in place without the drawer “box.” Alternatively, attach a tip-out (a narrow bin for storage of small items) to the backside of the drawer face, and install it back on the dresser with spring-loaded hinges.

Slide the lower drawers back into the cabinet to store towels, washcloths and other bathroom items.
