How to Install Clamps on a Metal Bed Frame

A metal bed frame holds a box spring and a mattress. It is usually adjustable and can also hold a headboard. A few types of metal frames are available, and some of them require clamps. These clamps hold the metal pieces together and let you adjust and secure the bed frame so that it fits your bed. The clamps come with your bed frame, so you won't need any tools other than a screwdriver to put the frame together.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the metal frame on the floor with the headboard brackets where you want the headboard to go. The wheels are not on the bed frame at this point, and the frame is right-side up.

    • 2

Arrange the frame pieces the way they will go when your frame is put together. Make sure the metal pieces are turned so they form an "L" shape. This "L" will cup the box spring and hold it in place when everything is assembled. The narrow sections of the frame are on hinges and will open to a 90-degree angle without any extra assembly. These pieces will support the foot and head of the bed.

    • 3

Pick up the bottom half of one of the side frames. Slide one clamp onto the section of the frame that you're holding. Make sure the screw is facing into the center of the frame. The clamp is not tight at this point, so it will slide easily.

    • 4

Fit the top half of the side frame into or over the bottom half of the frame -- depending on the specific frame you have -- and slide the clamp over the two pieces where they meet. Do not tighten the clamp yet.

    • 5

Repeat on the opposite side of the frame.

    • 6

Adjust the bed frame to fit your box spring. The frame has metal slots where you can insert the tabs to adjust the frame. Ensure that both sides are the same length. Tighten the clamps by tightening the screws.

    • 7

Pop the wheels into the wheel holes.

    • 8

Slide your boxspring and mattress onto the bed. Adjust the box spring so that it sits correctly in the "L" of the frame.
