How to Build a Bar in Your Bedroom

Bedrooms often have less space for walking and maneuvering, and as a result, bars built into bedrooms usually are thinner and protrude less into the room. The bar frame can be screwed into the floor for additional stability if necessary, though the relatively sedate environment surrounding a bedroom bar does not always require that step. An appropriate bar might be composed of a 2-by-4 frame surrounded by a plywood cover and a thick bar top, ideally made of a heavier and more attractive wood.

Instructions

    • 1

Set two 48-inch 2-by-4 boards with a large surface down, parallel to each other and about 4 feet apart. Position two more of these boards on top of them, perpendicular and overlapping so they make a 48-inch square frame. Screw two 2 1/2-inch wood screws into each corner, down through the top board and into the bottom board. Repeat to make a second square frame.

    • 2

Stand up these square frames, and space them 6 inches apart and parallel. Have an assistant hold them in place and set 6-inch 2-by-4s between each of the corners, so that the large surfaces of these little boards face the sides. Drill two 2 1/2-inch wood screws through each square frame and into each end of these small boards. Repeat with four more of these boards positioned between the center of each side of the frames, with a large surface flush with the outside edge of the frame.

    • 3

Hold a 3/4-by-12-by-48-inch plywood board against one of the thin sides of the frame. Screw 2-inch wood screws through the inside of the frame, through the 2-by-4s and into the plywood, spacing the screws every 12 inches. Repeat to attach an identical plywood board on the opposite side of the frame.

    • 4

Hold a 3/4-by-48-by-49 1/2-inch plywood board against the front of the bar so that it covers the edges of the two side plywood boards. Attach it in place by screwing 2-inch wood screws through the inside of the frame and into this front board, spacing the screws every 12 inches.

Set a bartop board that is at least 1 1/2-by-13-by-49 inches on top of the frame. Position it evenly and attach it in place by drilling holes every 12 inches up through the inside of the frame and into the bartop board. Attach 2 1/2-inch screws in the holes.
