How to Make a Door Into a Bed Frame

An old door is an inexpensive and interesting way of adding a headboard to your bed. Solid wooden doors work best since they can attach directly to the frame with the help of some wooden legs. An old door is an inexpensive and interesting way of adding a headboard to your bed. Solid wooden doors work best since they can attach directly to the frame with the help of some wooden legs. Fixing the door so it is a suitable headboard is the most time-consuming part. Paint the door any color you want.

Purchase two 2-by-4-inch pieces of lumber cut to the length of half your bed’s height. Have a notch 3 inches deep and as thick as the door cut into each 2-by-4s’ top. Your local hardware store cuts the wood free if purchased there.

Apply wood putty into any gaps or holes in the door. Smooth the putty with a cloth. Sand the door smooth with 100-grit sandpaper and wipe it down with a damp cloth.

    • 4

Paint the door with primer and let it dry completely. Add two coats of paint to the door, letting each coat dry before applying the next coat. Prime and paint the 2-by-4s the same color as the door.

    • 5

Insert the door’s bottom into the 2-by-4s’ notches, one at each end of the door. Using the drill, screwing the wood screws into the 2-by-4s and door holds them in place. Use two screws on each leg.

Position the headboard’s legs behind the bed frame. Tighten a screw through the frame into the headboard’s legs with the drill. Use two to three screws per leg.
