How to Install Nightstand Drawer Gliders

Drawer glides wear out over time. The weight of items and the constant pulling and pushing on the drawer can cause the glide to bend or become loose. You can tighten a loose glide with new screws or install new glides in your nightstand drawers. Glides are sold at home improvement stores and come in a variety of sizes. Make sure to select those designed for dressers rather than one designed for kitchen and bathroom cabinets.

Instructions

    • 1

Empty the nightstand of all items and clothing and remove any lamps or items from atop the nightstand.

    • 2

Unscrew the old drawer glides from the side of the drawer and inside the nightstand with a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 3

Identify the left and right drawer glide. The manufacturer will label each "L" or "R." Place the left set to the left of the drawer and the right to the right of the drawer. Pull each set of glides apart and keep them separated on each side of the drawer so you don't mix them up.

    • 4

Position the left drawer glide on the bottom-left corner of the left side of the nightstand drawer. Make sure the lip of the glide is underneath the drawer, the face of the glide is facing out and the wheel of the glide is facing out and situated in the bottom-left corner.

    • 5

Mark the screw holes of the glide with a pencil. Remove the glide.

    • 6

Predrill pilot holes into the screw marks with a Phillips screwdriver or electric drill.

    • 7

Line the glide back up against the bottom of the drawer. Make sure the screw holes in the glide are lined up with the pilot holes and secure the glide in place with screws.

    • 8

Repeat the steps to install the right glide to the bottom-right of the right side.

    • 9

Position the second half of the left glide against the inside-left of the nightstand. Butt the wheel on the glide against the front of the cabinet but allow 2 millimeters of space between the glide and the cabinet edge. Line it up with the screw holes of the old glide, if possible.

    • 10

Place a level on top of the glide to make sure it is plumb. Mark the screw holes with a pen, predrill pilot holes if the old screw holes don't line up, replace the glide and secure it in place with screws.

    • 11

Insert the wheel of the left drawer glide into the left interior glide. Slide the drawer into the nightstand to make sure the position of the left interior glide is correct. If the drawer slides in and out smoothly, you are ready to install the right side drawer glide. If not, lower or raise the interior glide as needed.

    • 12

Position the right interior glide against the screw holes in right side of the cabinet. Use a level to make sure the right glide is plumb. Repeat the steps to install it.

    • 13

Push the drawer into the glides to make sure it goes in and out with ease. If not, make sure both interior glides are plumb and neither too high nor too low. Use a screwdriver to adjust as necessary.
