How to Make a Faux Button Headboard

Buttons are commonly added to panel-style upholstered sections when the decorator wants to create the illusion that the sections are connected and tufted. Adding the buttons is often a simple application of hot glue after the sections are installed. This style of headboard is fast, light and easy to install and remove, which makes it an appropriate choice for rentals or bedrooms where the style may change quickly. Creating the headboard is a straightforward process.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut square pieces of foamcore boards that are 18 inches. If you want one row over a queen bed, cut four or five pieces. For each additional row of height, add four or five more pieces. Use a straight edge and a sharp artist's knife to cut the boards.

Spray one side of the boards and the back edges with spray adhesive. Place quilt batting on the work table, and then position the adhesive-side down. Wrap the batting to the back of the panel, keeping the batting smooth. Remove any excess batting. Fold or cut the corners so they are smooth and flat.

Spray the batting with spray adhesive for fabric. Place the decorative part of the fabric down on the work table. Position the panel batting-side down. Wrap the fabric to the back, and press it into the glue. Keep the fabric smooth. Fold the corners, and trim off the excess. Attach adhesive-backed hook-and-loop tape to the corners on the back side of the panels. Repeat for all the panels.

Attach the panels to the wall starting at the center of the head of the bed, 4 inches above the top of the mattress. Position your first panel level and centered. Place the second half of the hook-and-loop tape with the adhesive against the wall directly behind the tape on the panel. Press the panel into the tape. Repeat for all the panels, keeping them tight to each other.

Hot-glue decorator buttons over the joint where the four corners of the four panels meet. This will create the button look.
