How to Build Your Own Armoire Doors

Over the years, your favorite armoire can take a beating. Everyday use can damage the doors -- and if you move, the doors can get dented or broken in the process. At some point, you might decide to either replace the armoire or just replace the doors. Although the idea of making custom armoire doors may sound like a job for a professional carpenter, it's a fairly simple project. You can create new armoire doors in a weekend, saving a favorite piece of furniture and money in the process.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • 2 pieces of plywood, 1 1/4-inch
  • Sandpaper, medium-grit
  • Paint
  • Stain
  • Paintbrush
  • 2 hinges, 2-inch

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the armoire and height of the existing doors. If you don't have the doors, measure the opening where the doors will go. When measuring the opening and not the doors, divide the width in half and add 1 inch to determine the size for each door. For example, if the opening is 29 by 36 inches, each door would measure 15 1/2 by 36 inches.

    • 2

Cut two pieces of 1 1/4-inch plywood to match the dimensions from Step 1. In the example of the 15 1/2-inch wide doors, cut two pieces of 15 1/2-by-36-by-1 1/4-inch plywood. Sand all cut edges with medium-grit sandpaper.

    • 3

Paint or stain the plywood pieces to the desired color. Use two coats, if necessary. Allow them dry overnight before proceeding.

    • 4

Place the two plywood pieces on your work surface, face up. Choose the side you want seen on the outside of the armoire for the face of the doors. Attach two 2-inch hinges to the both doors. Place one hinge on each door 2 inches in from the top of the door, and the second 2 inches up from the bottom of the door. Place the hinges on the edge of the door that will attach to the armoire. Use the included hardware to attach the hinges.

Lift the first door to the armoire with the face of the door pointing out and the hinge against the front edge of the armoire. Secure the hinges on the door to the front of the armoire. Repeat the process to attach the second door to the other side of the armoire. If necessary, have someone help you hold the doors while attaching them.
