Alternatives to Mattresses

Sleeping is a large part of any human being's life, and sleeping comfortably is the difference between health and fatigue. Many people choose the traditional bed and mattress as their primary mode of sleeping, but a wide variety of mattress alternatives may help you sleep better.
  1. Hammocks

    • Hammocks are a hanging sleeping apparatus that hugs around the body and allow you to sleep as if in mid-air. Hammocks come as a long piece of fabric, can be hand-woven, quilted or made out of rope, and are hung on a spreader bar or on a standard stand without a spreader bar. Hammocks can hang from the ceiling or a wall as long as they can bear the weight. Hammocks are great for those with back issues because they contour around the back according to the body's position.

    Inflatable Air Beds

    • If you do not have the room for a bed and mattress or need a temporary place for a visitor to sleep, an inflatable air bed is a good option. Inflatable air beds are usually made of a plastic material that holds air and inflates to the shape of a traditional mattress. Air beds are less expensive than traditional beds and take up less room when deflated. A variety of sizes is available, with larger ones sleeping two people comfortably. High-quality air beds can be as comfortable as a traditional mattress and are a suitable alternative for the regular guest.

    Futon

    • A futon is a furniture piece that folds out into a bed when a person needs to sleep, and sits in a room like a traditional sofa when folded up. Futons are a cheap alternative and are good for those who do not have the room in their house or apartment for an extra bed. Futons come with a cushion folded out over the frame when it is in the bed position. These cushions come in a variety of thicknesses and sizes.
