Alternative to Ralph Lauren Down Blankets

A down comforter is made with feathers from a duck or goose and is very light and fluffy. However, despite the fact that it's so light, down comforters are incredibly warm. This is because down comforters have the ability to contain your body heat while wicking away moisture (allowing it to escape). Ralph Lauren is considered to be one of the most popular and luxurious brands of down comforters. However, there are definitely some alternatives to Ralph Lauren that are just as good.
  1. Fill Power

    • Down comforters are rated by their "fill power." The average down comforter has a fill rating of about 500 cubic inches. Cheaper down comforters are closer to 300, while more expensive ones can be around 700 cubic inches. Ralph Lauren down comforters typically range from 500 to 700 cubic inches. A good alternative to Ralph Lauren comforters based on fill power is the Hotel Collection Bedding brand. These comforters have fill powers of 700 and can be purchased at Macy's.

    Thread Count

    • A thread count is simply the amount of thread per inch on the fabric. So basically, the higher the thread count, the silkier and more comfortable the fabric will be (the higher the better). High-quality down comforters (like Ralph Lauren) have thread counts around 300 and up. On the other hand, average down comforters have thread counts around 200. Based on thread count, the Hotel Collection Bedding (400 thread count) and the Round Goose Down Comforter (300 thread count) are great alternatives to Ralph Lauren.

    Stitching

    • Down comforters come in a variety of different stitching options. Each stitching pattern provides a different visual appeal as well as a unique feel. Typical stitching choices include the Fashion stitch, the Karo stitch, the Baffled stitch and the Square stitch. The Square stitch is known for evenly distributing the heat throughout the comforter. Furthermore, the smaller stitched squares offer less heat than the larger squares. On the flip side, the Karo stitch allows you to concentrate heat towards certain spots by fluffing it down. In general, most brands (including Ralph Lauren) carry comforters in all of the stitching patterns. Personal preference (with comfort and visual appeal in mind) are normally the deciding factor with stitching.

    Best Alternatives

    • With fill power, thread count and stitching in mind, there are some really great alternatives to Ralph Lauren. Hotel Collection Bedding (Macy's) is an outstanding choice for someone looking for very high fill power and a luxurious thread count. These are considered premium comforters and often carry a price tag of around $300.

If you want something with a more moderate thread count of 300 yet plenty of fill power (550), then consider going the Round Goose Down Comforter from Target. It is much more affordable at around $150.

Other brands to consider include Martha Stewart Collection, Blue Ridge, Calvin Klein, Charter Club, Home Design and Pacific Coast Collection. These brands are typically carried at all major department stores.

    Considerations

    • When shopping for a down comforter, remember that ultimately your choice should be based on a blend of attractiveness, compatibility with your existing decor, comfort and durability. Try not to get caught up with name brands. If you can find an off-brand comforter that suits you, you will probably end up saving money. Moreover, if you are looking for specific allergen-free comforters, you may want consult with a salesperson in the bedding section.
