How to Make an Easy Canopy Bed

A canopy bed adds elegance, intimacy, privacy and little bit of fun to any bedroom. Most four-poster beds do not come with the canopy and have to be purchased separately. They can be expensive so instead spending a lot of money, try making one yourself. You can make one for your four-poster bed, or even one for a regular bed without posts. It's easy, inexpensive and you'll have a brand new bed in no time.

Instructions

  1. For a Four-Poster Bed

    • 1

Remove the top of the posts. Measure the inside length of the bed posts from post-to-post. Record the length.

    • 2

Measure the width of the bed from post-to-post. Record the width.

    • 3

Cut two pieces of the wood to the length between the posts.

    • 4

Repeat step 3 for the width between the posts.

    • 5

Stick the circle hooks into each end of every piece of wood.

    • 6

Screw the hooks in so they are securely fastened into the wood.

    • 7

Fix each wooden pole on each post. Put the tops of the posts back onto the posts to make sure the wooden poles fit well.

    • 8

Measure the height from the floor to the top of the poles (add four inches to the number).

    • 9

Purchase the desired fabric for the height (plus four inches) of the canopy (two panels fabric will needed for each side of the canopy--eight pieces of fabric total).

    • 10

Fold three inches of the fabric over at the top of each panel. Add a strip of fabric tape along the entire length of the folded fabric. Do this to each panel.

    • 11

Run an iron, carefully, over the fabric to adhere the folded fabric (the poles will be fed through this fold).

    • 12

Fold one inch of fabric up on the bottom of each panel. Add the strip along the length of the fabric and iron to adhere. This will give the bottom of the fabric a clean look.

    • 13

Take each pole off of the posts, and feed the poles through each fabric panel. Place the poles on the posts again, and replace the tops of the posts to secure the poles.

    • 14

Do this so two panels of fabric are on each side of the bed. Allow the canopy to hang around the bed, or pull the canopy sheets to each pole and tie with a ribbon.

    For a Regular Bed

    • 15

Measure the height of the room, from floor to ceiling.

    • 16

Purchase one large sheet of tulle twice the length of the height, plus two feet. For a thicker canopy, purchase the tulle four times the length of the height of the ceiling and fold it in half.

    • 17

Purchase a large embroidery hoop. Pull the inner circle out of the embroidery hoop.

    • 18

Lay the entire fabric flat on a clean surface. Put the embroidery hoop directly in the middle of the fabric.

    • 19

Pull about two feet of the tulle fabric through the hoop, and replace the inner hoop on top of the fabric and outer hoop (this will keep the tulle in place in the hoop).

    • 20

Pull the fabric in the center of the hoop to a point and thread a string or thin ribbon through. Tie in a double knot, then into a bow.

    • 21

Measure the ceiling 10 inches from the wall out for a 17 inch hoop and 13 inches for a 20 inch hoop. Screw the hook into the ceiling.

For added support, you can hammer a anchor in to the ceiling then screw the hook into the anchor.

    • 22

Pull the hoop with the fabric up to the hook and hook on the ribbon or string. Situate the hoop so that the opening of the canopy is facing the front of the bed.
