What To Look for in Pillow Top Mattress Toppers

Pillow-top mattress pads are made from different materials on both the outer covering and interior padding. Personal preference will play a part on which type you choose, but take other factors into consideration as well. Because you want the topper to remain in good condition over the long term, evaluate the fit, stain resistance, quality and how it secures to the mattress among other things before buying one.
  1. Types

    • Rely on personal preference for type. If you like constant support from the topper, choose the memory foam topper. This supports your body in each spot that it touches. If a cradling effect is something you prefer, then choose a down or down alternative. With this option, you will sink into and the material as it cradles you. The stuffing shifts and it does not offer the level of firm support of a foam topper.

    Lasting Performance

    • Pick a pillow-top mattress topper that is quality made. Just as with different mattresses, the quality will vary in lasting performance. Select a topper that reverts to its original form after the pressure of your body has been on it all night, either with the foam, which should bounce back, or the down stuffing, which can be fluffed back into place. Look for a form that lasts for years and that will not wear down after continued use. Also choose a material covering for the topper thick enough that it will not wear thin over time.

    Stain and Water Resistance

    • Look for the tag that ensures stain resistance. The mattress pillow topper should resist stains. The topper should not be absorbent, especially if it is going to be used for a youngster who bed-wets or an incontinent person. In this case, select a topper that is somewhat waterproof, made from a material that beads the water and lets it run off. It should also be treated with a stain-guard of some type unless you plan to cover it within a plastic mattress cover.

    Secure Fit

    • Consider fit as an important feature for a pillow-top mattress topper, avoiding one that is too small or too big for the mattress. If the topper is too small, you will inevitably find yourself on the uncomfortable edge of the topper. If the topper is too big, it will slip off the bed. The topper needs to be secured to your bed to avoid it from bunching up or moving. Look at the design and see how the topper is intended to be anchored to your mattress. If it is one that is anchored by its own weight, you still might need to buy the clip-on sheet straps to keep it down. Find one with the built in elastic straps to attach it to the mattress.
