Ideas for a Wood Headboard

Wood is a perfect material to use for a headboard because of its versatility and functionality. Wood can be restored to its original texture or painted over for a fresh new look. Durable and sturdy, wood headboards are also long lasting and create a rustic design to the bedroom. Look around your home for old pieces of wood that can be reused to create your headboard to keep your budget low and affordable.
  1. Shutters

    • Why not build an unexpected wood headboard using old wood shutters. Give the shutters a fresh coat of paint or stain them in a shade to contrast with bed linens and other accessories. For a commanding design to the room, hang the shutters vertically so the wood shutters side-by-side are a stunning focal point to the room upon entering. For a more traditional design, install two or three shutters horizontally and across the back of the bed. Hang the shutters so they extend at least two to three inches past both ends of the bed.

    Old Door

    • Old wooden doors create a stunning focal point to the bedroom design palette. For a more traditional wood look, sand down the old door and add a coat of tung oil, which helps to moisten the old wood and bring out the natural grain striation. For a colorful design, paint the door in your favorite paint color or add a stenciled design around the edges of the door. Choose colors already found in the bedroom to help coordinate the colors together and create a well-balanced look to the bedroom. Don't forget, you can also stain the vintage door to match existing pieces like a favorite old dresser or antique mirror.

    Art

    • Use artwork framed in wooden frames as your headboard design. Make an arrangement of photos behind the bed to give the illusion of a headboard. Use framed photos and pieces of black and white photography for an unusual and non-traditional headboard. Space them out evenly so they are arranged to create the look of a headboard. Think about framing prints that are within the same genre for a cohesive look to the space. Add color using bright red or yellow frames for added vibrancy and color.
