How to Adapt a King Size Bedskirt to Queen Size

Bedskirts---also knows as dust ruffles---give your bed a neater, more polished look as well as help conceal anything you might be storing, or hiding, under your bed. Finding the perfect one can be frustrating, especially if the one you absolutely adore seems to only come in king-sized, and you need a queen-sized bedskirt. Don't panic, and don't settle for one you don't like as much just because it's the right size. It's not hard to resize king dust ruffles to fit queen beds if you follow the steps below.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash, dry and iron the king-sized bedskirt.

    • 2

Remove the mattress from your bed and set it aside. This is a lot easier with two people.

    • 3

Lay the king-sized bedskirt on top of your box spring. King-sized beds and queen-sized beds are the same length--80 inches--but there is a 16-inch difference in their widths.

    • 4

Align the edge of the bedskirt where the liner meets the ruffle (or skirt, if it is tailored) with the top of the box spring along the foot of the bed. Place it so that none of the liner would show if you put the mattress back on. Put a few straight pins through the bedskirt and into the box spring to hold it in place.

    • 5

Use the straight pins to pin the corners of the bed skirt to the box spring. Once you have pinned all four corners, pin the left and right sides of the bedskirt to the left and right sides of the box spring, aligning it so that none of the liner will show from beneath the mattress.

    • 6

Decide if you want to cut the fabric of the liner to fit the bed, or if it is possible to just gather it more. If you decide to gather the material, take a needle and thread and make big basting stitches along the edge of the ruffle at the foot of the bed. Anchor the stitches at one end, and then slide the fabric along the stitches until it fits the box spring properly. Do the same thing at the head of the bed. Stitch the new gathers in place with your sewing machine.

Figure out where you want seams to show if you have a tailored bedskirt. They are usually placed at the corners. Leave at least 2 inches of extra fabric for the seam allowance, and cut from the head of the bed down to the foot.

Lay one side piece on the box spring printed side down, on top of the liner fabric. Align the cut edge with the liner fabric and pin them together so that when you flip the fabric over the side of the bed, none of the liner will show from beneath the mattress. Once you have both sides fitted, make sure the corners will fit smoothly, and then sew everything in place with the sewing machine.

Remove any leftover pins and lay the bedskirt back on the box spring. Place it so that none of the liner fabric shows, and then put the mattress back on top.
