Double Sided Mattress Vs. One Sided

Although one-sided or double-sided mattresses may be a personal preference, most quality mattresses of either style still come with a 10- or 20-year warranty. Both wear over a period of time. Simply weigh the pros and cons to find the mattress that best suits your lifestyle.
  1. Comfort

    • Neither a one-sided mattress nor a double-sided mattress holds more comfort than the other; both can fit many different needs. The best way to judge the comfort of either type of mattress is to lie down on each and determine your comfort level. Be sure the mattress has a high coil count.

    Durability

    • Because you can use both sides, a double-sided mattress may last longer. Most one-sided mattresses are made with heat tempered coils for longer life.

    Convenience

    • Some consumers may find it difficult to have to turn their double-sided mattress every three months due to physical ailments or simply because it may be hard on the back. A one-sided mattress never has to be flipped.

    Availability

    • A lot of manufacturers now produce only one-sided mattresses. However, double-sided mattresses are still being offered by some, such as Campbell Mattress Company and Englander. A new flammability standard passed by the Consumer Product Safety Commission in 2007 made it expensive to produce double-sided mattresses to meet these fire safety standards.

    Considerations

    • One-sided mattresses are made of high-quality foams and fibers such as latex and visco-elastic memory, which last longer and do not break down as quickly. However, the lack of turning the mattress may cause layers of foam and padding to compress. A double-sided mattress may come with a manufacturer’s warranty that could be voided if you fail to flip your mattress.
