Tools to Build Log Beds

After you've made the decision to build a log bed, make sure to equip your garage or workstation with the proper tools. Log beds require items found easily with a quick trip to the hardware store; although there are many tools that seem similar to household items, it is best to obtain equipment specially made for the cutting and refining of wood.
  1. Bit Set

    • Although it looks similar to many tool collections found in the garage, consider acquiring a bit set specifically for cutting wood. Those bit sets are created for doweling and have pre-sharpened pieces which can cut through any wood. A set may contain bits in sizes from 1/4 inch through an inch with smooth, round shanks which will not tear any surface material. Individual bits are also available with sizing over 3 inches. Bits may be used with an electric or hand drill.

    Tenon Maker

    • The tenon maker works similarly to a pencil sharpener to cut log pieces. Cutting capability for different size logs are available, including 5/8 inches through 2 3/4 inches in diameter. The included wood guide(s) holds the tenon in place while the maker's blade cuts through it. Some tenon makers include multiple guides; extra guides of varying sizes are available separately. Tenons required for the base of the bed, legs or headboards may be cut with the maker. Consider cutting alternating size tenons for a rippled headboard look.

    Draw Knives

    • It may be tempting to grab a knife out of your silverware drawer and jump into building a log bed. Instead, consider adding a draw knife to your toolbox. Used specifically on wood, the draw knife can strip and shape logs and peel bark. The knives are made of steel with beech handles. Select from a straight knife (stripping) or curved (peeling), both are 11 inches.
