Rearrange the furniture in the room around the bed's planned location. As a place marker, leave your old bed where you want the new bed to be. If you don't have a bed, leave sufficient room.

    • 2

Use your tape measure or yardstick to measure the areas around the bed. Assuming you will be placing the headboard against one wall, decide much space you want on either side of the bed and in front. Place one end of your tape measure on the wall and measure inward until you reach where your bed will be. Record the measurements.

Leave enough space on either side of the bed so you can comfortably get in and out from either side. If you plan to have a television in front of the bed, allow plenty of room so the TV can be at least a few feet away. Otherwise, you could strain your eyes.

Determine how much space remains where the new bed will go. Measure each side of this space. You'll want to have a height measurement and a width measurement, meaning along the sides of the bed and across the top. These measurements will help you find the right sized bed. Record the measurements.

Decide which bed size best fits the measurements you recorded in step 4. A twin sized bed is about 76 inches long and 39 inches wide. A full sized bed is about 75 inches long and 54 inches wide. A queen sized bed is approximately 80 inches long and 60 inches wide, while a king sized bed is approximately 80 inches long and 78 inches wide. These are the most common bed sizes.
