How to Make a Simple Bed Frame

A wooden bed frame is a classic piece suitable for almost any décor. They range from very basic designs to quite elaborate creations. Before you purchase a wood bed frame, consider building one yourself. Stain the frame for a natural look or paint it to match your bedroom. A simple bed frame can be made with minimal materials in a relatively short amount of time. This is an inexpensive project that isn't too difficult for a novice woodworker to tackle.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your mattress with a tape measure to determine the size of the frame you need. The frame should fit tightly around the mattress. Measure the width of the mattress, which will be the length of the end rails. Cut two pieces of 2-by-6-inch lumber with a saw for the end rails. Measure the length of the mattress and subtract 2 inches from the total length. This will be the length of the side rails. Cut two pieces of 2-by-6-inch lumber for the side rails.

Place the end and side rails into position on a flat surface. Attach the four corners with wood glue. Clamp each corner with a large clamp and allow the glue to dry. Screw two heavy duty screws into each corner with a screwdriver to secure the rails.

Measure the distance between the inner edges of the end rails. Cut a 2-by-6-inch board to this length. This will be used as a support beam. Measure the end rails and use a pencil to mark the center. Place the support beam at the center of the mark and secure with two screws.

Measure the width and length of the frame from the outer edges of the rails. Cut a sheet of ¾-inch plywood to fit over the top of the frame. Secure to the rails and support beam with screws. If you must use two or more sheets of plywood to cover the frame, use metal plates and screws to join the pieces.
