Instructions for an Essential Home Dresser

In a bedroom, the dresser is almost as important as the bed itself. Without a large enough and well organized dresser, you're likely to wind up with clothes strewn all over your room, disturbing the peace you need to get a good night's sleep. An essential dresser needs to provide adequate and easy storage for apparel and accessories. Ideally, it will also be pleasing to the eye.
  1. Size of Dresser

    • The ideal dresser is a large piece of furniture. It should be at least 3 to 4 feet tall and have at least three drawers. More is always better, as you will be able to store more stuff in them. The dresser should have a flat top for display and storage of jewelry and keepsakes. Sometimes the dresser can go in a walk-in closet, if you have one.

    Drawers

    • The drawers should vary in size, starting small at the top and getting larger toward the bottom. Socks, underwear and small clothing items are usually kept in the top drawers, while shirts, shorts and pants are kept in the lower larger drawers. When buying your essential dresser, check the drawer construction carefully. Ideally, the construction should be dovetail. Make sure the drawer bottoms are sturdy, and the drawers slide in and out easily.

    Top

    • The top of the dresser basically acts as a sort of open drawer, where rings, watches, earrings, bracelets and items you keep in your pocket can be kept when you are not using them or are turning in for the night. Lamps can also be placed on top of the dresser for light, as well as mirrors and keepsakes that you like to see when you wake up. Make sure the top can hold everything you need to put there.
