Go to your local home improvement store and buy a 30-by-80-inch solid panel door, an 8-foot piece of chair molding and trim nails. Buy a can of paint with the color of your choosing and a paint brush.
Measure and cut the door to 60 inches in length using a tape measure, pencil and a circular saw. If the panels are not evenly spaced on the door, cut the appropriate amount off each end so that the panels are centered.
Measure and mark 60 inches on the chair molding with the tape measure. Cut the molding to size with the circular saw. Lay the door on a flat surface and attach the chair molding along one side of the door using trim nails and a hammer. This will be the top of the headboard.
Paint the headboard and chair molding with two coats of paint. Allow adequate drying time between each coat and before hanging the headboard.
Hang the new headboard on the wall behind the bed so that it will be visible above your pillows. Treat the headboard as if it were a heavy mirror and attach two D-rings on the back of the door about 3 inches down from the top and a few inches in from the ends. Take two picture hooks that can support the weight of the door and attach them to the wall at the same distance as the D-rings, then hang the new headboard.
Cut three optional supports for the headboard if there is a concern regarding the weight. Measure three pieces of 2-by-2 lumber the length from the floor to the bottom of the headboard. Attach these to the wall, one at each end of the headboard and one in the middle. This will give the headboard something to rest on to help support the weight.
