Platform bed frames are constructed of either metal or wood. Typically they are higher than a standard frame and bed spring set. The most distinguishing characteristic of a platform, however, is the solid base on which to set the mattress. Traditional frames have no solid support in the center, while platforms provide a continuous wood or metal base.
The platform bed style comes from traditional Japanese beds. These beds were low to the ground, extremely flat and firm. Over time, platform beds have become a bit more modern. They are higher off the ground, but they still provide extra firmness a traditional frame cannot give.
There are three main types of platform beds: low profile, canopy and storage. The low profile variety has no headboard or footboard. The canopy style has a tall post coming from each corner. From these posts you can hang a canopy, curtains, or nothing. You can also put the beds with head and foot boards into this category. The storage platform bed typically has a low profile style, but is enclosed all the way to the floor. Inside the platform are drawers and storage spaces for clothing.
If you are into Feng Shui, stay away from the storage platform beds. They prevent energy flow under and around the bed while you sleep. If you don't care about Feng Shui, the storage beds can help you save space in cramped living quarters.
Modern platform beds are typically higher than traditional frames. The mattress sizes that fit these frames, however, are exactly the same. You can buy platform beds in single, double, full, queen, king, and California king sizes.
