How to Protect a Mattress Cover for a Bed

A mattress cover can be used to protect a mattress from becoming soiled and dirty due to continual wear and tear. Typically, a mattress cover is a clear thick plastic that encases a mattress and has a zippered opening. Its thick, sturdy material protects the more delicate mattress fibers from damage. Over time, a mattress cover can also become soiled and damaged. To protect a mattress cover, it is important to maintain the integrity of the plastic cover and keep it clean and sanitized.

Place a mattress pad on top of the mattress cover. A mattress pad is a soft, often quilted, thin pad that can be placed over the plastic mattress cover. Most mattress pads come with elastic ends that can be placed around the corners of the mattress and mattress cover to keep the pad from sliding off the plastic cover. For added protection and comfort, add memory foam on top of the mattress pad.

Vacuum the mattress cover. Dust and dirt can collect on the mattress cover over time. Clean dust, soil, and bedbugs off the mattress cover, using the hose attachment on a vacuum. Dust is an inevitable problem when it comes to mattress covers, and it must be removed to avoid damage. If the dust and dirt on a mattress cover are ignored, they can reduce the life span of the mattress. Vacuuming the mattress cover also reduces the presence of unwanted allergens. Allergy sufferers must vacuum the mattress cover on a monthly basis.

Wash any stains off the surface of the mattress cover, using a rag and dish soap. For tougher stains, use a few drops of laundry detergent on the rag. Allow the mattress cover to dry completely before placing the mattress pad and bedding back on the bed. Use an electric fan or a ceiling fan to dry the mattress cover thoroughly.

Spray the mattress cover with a common household disinfecting spray, wiping it off with a soft cloth. Use a disinfectant spray guaranteed to prevent mold and mildew. Untreated mold and mildew will cause the mattress cover to deteriorate. Allow the spray to dry completely before re-securing the mattress pad into place.

Flip the mattress. Rotating it every six months will increase the longevity of the mattress and the mattress cover. Allow the mattress cover to wear evenly on both sides by flipping it twice a year. Flip it so that the top becomes the bottom and the foot is switched with the head. Record the flips and rotations, so the mattress cover can be preserved.
