How to Paint Drawer Knobs

Give your dresser, vanity table, end table or desk accents of color with painted drawer knobs. Whether your drawer knobs are metal or wood, it's possible to paint them to match or contrast with your furniture color. Paint drawer knobs with funky colors such as orange or pink to spice up a room, or neutral colors like metallic gold, silver, brown or beige for a touch of subtle elegance. Painting furniture knobs is a quick project that saves you the cost of buying new hardware.

Instructions

  1. Wooden Knobs

    • 1

Unscrew the knobs from behind the drawer front panels. Remove the knobs and save the screws.

    • 2

Place the wooden knobs on a sheet of newspaper. Set up the newspaper painting area outside or in a well-ventilated area.

    • 3

Paint wooden knobs with glossy or matte acrylic craft paint and a small paint brush. Cover the knobs thoroughly with the paint. Let dry about 30 minutes. Apply a second coat.

    • 4

Let the painted drawer knobs dry completely before reinstalling them on the drawer panels.

    Metal Knobs

    • 5

Place the metal knobs on a sheet of newspaper. Set up the newspaper painting area outside or in a well-ventilated area with low humidity with a temperature between 50 and 90 degrees.

    • 6

Apply a spray primer if the metal knobs have never been painted before. Follow the paint manufacturer's instructions for drying time between priming and painting.

    • 7

Hold the spray paint nozzle approximately 10 to 14 inches above the knobs. Spray on a thin coat, using an even spraying motion. Let the paint dry, then apply a second thin coat.

    • 8

Let the spray-painted metal knobs dry completely before reinstalling them on the drawer panels.
