How to Fix a Sleep Number Bed

Select Comfort's Sleep Number beds work by turning a dial that inflates or deflates air chambers under the mattress. A dual-chambered bed has two chambers to make the mattress soft or firm, according to how each partner prefers to sleep. Sometimes the beds will lose air for no apparent reason. Air loss from single-chamber beds might be remedied by capping the air chamber; air losses from dual-chamber beds that aren't due to loose connections must be fixed by a technician. But before you call for one, run a diagnostic test to make sure the chamber is actually leaking.

Instructions

  1. Single-Chamber Beds

    • 1

Check the hose connections to the air chambers. They should make a clicking sound when reconnected. The hose connections are at the head of the bed, underneath the foam comfort pad, at the ends of the air chamber. The hose connections look like plastic rings at the end of the air hoses.

    • 2

Check that the o-rings and connectors (located on the ends of the hoses) aren't damaged or cracked. Reconnect the pump, ensuring the connector snaps tightly. The o-ring looks like a very skinny donut and the pump is located at the head of the bed. It sticks out from the mattress.

    • 3

Add 15 to your usual sleep number setting.

    • 4

Take off the hose from the air chamber and then immediately cap the air chamber. The air chamber is located under your foam comfort pad.

    • 5

Wait a minimum of 48 hours (you can still sleep on the bed during this time). If, after this time, the bed has softened, call Sleep Number customer service for further assistance. Otherwise, replace the cap with the hose and continue to use the bed as normal.

    • 6

Repeat Steps 1 to 4 if the problem continues.

    Dual-Chamber Beds

    • 7

Check the hose connections to the air chambers. They should make a clicking sound when reconnected. The hoses are connected to the ends of the air chambers at the head of the bed (lift up the foam comfort pad to locate them).

    • 8

Set the sleep number for both chambers to 100.

    • 9

Press and hold the up arrow button until the remote displays "20" (this takes about 15 seconds). The diagnostic test has now started, and will take 20 minutes to run.

    • 10

Record the result displayed on the remote after the test has finished. A "NO" result means that there is no air loss. An "Ll" or "LL" result indicates air loss, which means you should call customer service for help.

    • 11

Switch the air hose from the left chamber to the right chamber and the right chamber to the left chamber, then repeat the diagnostic test from steps 1 to 4.
