Different Ways to Paint Dressers

Updating an old dresser or inexpensive used dresser is as easy as picking up a paintbrush. Cheaper than buying new, you can customize your dresser to coordinate with your home décor or use the dresser as a blank canvas on which to express your creativity. Whether you turn your dresser into an ever-changing landscape for a child's imagination or give it an old-world look that will leave your friends guessing, you can complete your painted dresser project in just a weekend.
  1. Chalk Board

    • Turn any surface into a chalkboard with special paint.

Ideal for a kid's room or dresser used in a home office, prime the dresser then cover the entire surface with black "chalkboard" paint. Chalkboard paint turns any surface into a writable chalkboard and once dry has the potential to be home to countless artistic expressions and love notes. Use colored chalk to draw elaborate designs on dresser drawers or stay organized by labeling drawers so contents are easy to find.

    Vintage Crackle

    • Distress a dresser with a crackled paint finish.

A specialty finish like a vintage crackle mimics the look of old distressed paint on any surface. Paint the dresser any color of your choice depending on the rest of the room's décor. Apply a crackle-medium you buy at your local paint store and allow the mixture to distress the paint for about an hour. Apply a black topcoat to further antique and highlight the crackle finish. Seal the whole dresser than with a few coats of polyurethane.

Create a slightly different look by painting the drawers with the crackle finish and leaving the rest of the dresser painted normally.

    Faux Rust

    • A rust surface means an organic combination of colors and tones.

Rusting is another faux finish that can turn any surface into a delightfully rusted antique. Lightly sand the dresser surface first to remove any grime or shiny surface paint. Paint the dresser's body in a flat iron black and paint the drawer fronts with the rust base-coat paint like the one made by "Sophisticated Finishes." Let dry 24 hours then apply the rusting agent to create the beautiful organic rust finish. Spray dresser drawers with a clear sealant to enhance the rich brown tones.

    Glow in the Dark Accents

    • Glow in the dark paint can be a fun addition to a child's room.

Create a colorful dresser that your kids will love. Use a rich blue color in a glossy finish to paint the body of the dresser, and then paint each drawer another primary color. Once the paint is dry apply some festive accents like stars and flowers using glow-in-the dark paint. Your child's face will light up when you shut off the lights at night and the dresser glows pleasantly like a special surprise.
